When I first started my business, I thought that I had to be on every social media platform to get leads.

It was overwhelming to work all these angles when I was working by myself, and not all of them were generating the right type of leads that I wanted.

You too might be just throwing content out wherever everyone else is. You might be finding some lackluster results in your efforts.

I would suggest that you should reduce the places that you are looking. Maximize your efforts in the right places to get the best results.

If you think about it, in our business we should niche who we are selling. We shouldn’t try to be everything to everybody.

In the same way we should niche our marketing efforts by targeting the right platforms. This means using fewer places the right way to get the most results.

This will create less work for you, while giving you the best results.

Before we jump into that though, you should know about something that affects many home-based and online entrepreneurs.

The core of getting our businesses off the ground is to find qualified leads that turn into customers. This will lead your business to success.

There are many different options you can use, some paid, and a lot of them free.

With many different ways that you can generate leads online, do you know where to look for your niche market?

Depending on what you are selling and who you are selling to will determine on where you go to reach them. It also determines how to approach them.

Some fun facts to start with to is how saturated are the different platforms?

Did you know that today there are 500 million blogs on the internet? This accounts for 30 percent of the total websites.

YouTube currently has 31 million channels on it and 5 billion videos watched a day.

Instagram has 1 billion users with half of them using it every day.

Yelp is a platform that vets out and scrutinizes businesses so most of them are legitimate to cold call.

LinkedIn is the most popular professional social network with 660 million users.

So, what do all those numbers mean to you?

This means there are a hell of a lot of places to find your target market. With all these different platforms, they are all there waiting to hear from you.

You can also access these platforms and market to your target market in a few different ways.

The 5 free lead generators we are going to talk about today is influencers, blogging, YouTube, Yelp, and LinkedIn.

So, is it truly a free way to get in touch with your target market?

The short answer is yes, all of these ways do have paid options, but you don’t have to use them to get in touch with your target market.

These are absolutely free; you don’t have to pay any one to use them.

They typically require that you do invest your time and effort to get the best results.

By time I mean that you will have to take the time to get your name out there. Consistency is the only way to build your reputation to get the trust of people for you.

By effort I mean that you will work to get the results.

If you do this though, you will see great results from your time and effort.

Let’s dive into the 5 free lead generators now, we’re going to talk about how you make it work for you. We’ll also go over the pros and cons of each one.

The first one we are going to talk about is influencers and they are most prevalent on Instagram.

This is where you use someone or a business that has a large following on Instagram and tap into the crowd that listens to them.

If you’re only starting out, the best results for your effort is to start with micro-influencers. These are influencers with less than 100,000 followers.

When you approach the influencer, you should offer something in return for giving you a shoutout to their audience.

This could be sending them a sample of your product if you are selling a tangible item or a copy of your work if it’s a digital item.

You can also work out a discount code that they provide their followers. You can give them a percentage of the profits each time your products or services are bought for promoting it.

The pros of using an influencer is that you a find someone that is specific to your niche. They also have a group of people that are open to hearing about the latest and best things out there.

It is also really easy to find these influencers on Instagram by using keywords to search for them.

You can also talk to multiple micro-influencers and put your name in front of a lot of people.

The downside to using influencers is that you don’t know how many people will actually see your message.

This option is primarily good for those that have a product or service to sell to individuals.

Blogging is a great tool to use to provide value added information and sell products.

You can write blogs about your niche that will attract leads. Through those blogs you can sell products or services that people will want more.

If you sell products, you can also write articles about the products and have a link to purchase them.

If you sell services you can write articles within your niche and offer your services in your blogs.

Another great thing about blogs is that when you build a readership you have regular people that see your name. You can add on affiliate links to products and services that people will click on and buy.

One way you can really get your name in front of others is to offer to guest blog on other sites.

To start with you want to post a number of blogs of your own. After you write a few, approach others to guest blog on theirs.

The pros for blogging are that you create a permanent presence that builds your online credibility and with search engines.

Once you have been blogging a while, you’ll easily build trust with people. When they see that you have provided a lot of good content, they will trust you more.

You can also easily find other blog sites to guest blog on that will get your name in front of a lot of potential customers.

The flip side to this is that it takes a lot of time to create the content that you need to fill up your blog. It also takes a lot of time to get your content out.

This is a good thing to use if you want to build a long-term presence on the Internet.

Use blogs whether you are selling to individuals or businesses.

If you do good with your blog you can build super fans that will stay with you indefinitely.

Another great avenue in 5 free lead generators is YouTube to generate free leads.

If you are not afraid to get in front of the camera, you can reach many people through videos.

YouTube currently has 31 million channels and is the second largest search engine next to Google.

It’s a great platform to sell to both businesses and individuals.

The Internet is such a disconnected place to do business. Because of this, videos are a great way to promote your products and services.

Prospects can actually see you and your company, so they make interaction more personal.

A lot of blogs are also starting to incorporate short YouTube videos into them. This adds personality into your words and puts a face to the name.

One of the pros to using YouTube is that you can use even a smartphone to make a video. Although it is not high quality, you can still create videos and post them for free.

YouTube allows you to add meta tags to target the right niche for your videos. This will get the videos front of the right people.

You can also share and embed videos on other platforms to maximize your exposure.

On your videos you can show your products and functionality.

This even works with things like software and digital products if you use a screen capture program.

You can also demonstrate your products being used in real-time so they can see how good it is.

Videos also brings you right into your customer’s office or living room without physically being there. You can really add a personal touch to your advertising.

There are a couple of drawbacks to using YouTube. Number one, if you are not good in front of a camera you will have a difficult time putting a great video together that attracts customers.

The second thing is that creating great videos and content takes a lot of time. Using this platform will take patience to building a following.

Finally, when you are only starting on YouTube, getting actual videos to be seen can take a while too.

When you do build a following on YouTube though, you will get loyal followers out of it.

When looking for a large number of businesses to call in a specific area, Yelp is the place to go. Yelp is a website to find companies by searching in a specific industry.

You can find places like restaurants or lawyers and it will pull up only those types of businesses.

You can also specify demographics all the way down to the zip code if you need a tight area.

Yelp will give you the company name, address, phone number, and website of the companies you’re looking at. It’s easy to look at who they are and know how to contact them.

The only drawbacks to Yelp are that you’ll find some companies that are no longer in business.

That means you are going to be taking time to make some unnecessary cold calls.

The other thing is that they provide no contact information regarding the people that work there. Your first call will truly be a cold call.

Nonetheless, this is a great website in the B2B world to gather information.

Lastly, we are going to talk about LinkedIn, which is the largest professional social media platform on the web.

LinkedIn has almost 600 million users subscribed, and almost half of them are active monthly users.

This makes it a great place to find people at specific companies with a lot of contact information.

Beyond that, you can search by company and find people with specific titles. Many times, they will have their email address and phone number on their profile.

I have another secret on LinkedIn if you need an email address of someone that does not appear on their profile. You can look at other profiles to see the format of the company email addresses.

With this info you can make a good guesstimate of the one for the person you are wanting to contact.

When looking at companies too, you can usually get their website. You can go scope the company out before you call them.

Having the profile of the company along with the website address allows you to do a little discovery on your own before calling them so you don’t waste your time.

With the search function on LinkedIn you can find people by company, title, and by location. This is a great place to do your homework.

The biggest drawback to LinkedIn is that although it is a social network for professionals, people on the platform do not respond to messages directed towards them much.

Because when you send out messages you will typically get crickets in return.

This doesn’t mean to not try it, just set your expectations low.

LinkedIn is a great place to find leads for businesses and specific niches like entrepreneurs and the like.

So how do you use all of this?

At the beginning of the blog, I talked about how I tried to throw content out everywhere. I really had no idea what I was doing.

If I understood how to use online platforms to get my word out, the things I did in the beginning would be different.

In thinking about this for your business, where do you start?

If you don’t know where to begin, start with who your target or niche market is. Then think about where they hang out.

Get into the shoes of your ideal customer and think like they do.

If you are looking at selling to individuals, using an Instagram influencer, blog, or video would be great options.

If you are looking to go B2B then Yelp and LinkedIn might be the route to go.

Or maybe a combination of the ones good for individuals and businesses.

Remember that you should pick two or three only though. When you start, don’t do a bunch of them half-assed, rather do a couple really well.

See if they are working or not, then try something else if you’ve got the couple down and getting leads.

Or maybe one of them isn’t working so well and let that go to try something else.

Give each one time to work. As I said a few minutes ago, a couple of them will take a lot of time to get results.

And if you give the time, you might have a platform that will be very rewarding for your business.

I talked briefly about using paid options that can help you generate leads. If you go this route it is a quicker way than a few of these we talked about today.

Paying someone else to do the work for you can sometimes produce better results because they could be an expert. They already know the tricks and ways to quickly ramp up your marketing.

However, you decide to go at it, always make sure you take the time to learn how to do it right so you get the best results for your efforts.

Try different things and see what works for you!
